No matter what your wellness goals are, keeping a journal can always be beneficial in helping you achieve them. Our days are always filled with lots to do and staying accountable is very important.
Record daily events for later reference
Depending on what your purpose for journaling is, keeping a record of your daily events can definitely help you out long term. When I began my weight loss journey, I started using a few calorie counting apps. I entered everything I consumed, each and every day. In my case, it was a food journal. At first, it was to make sure I was not overeating so I could lose the weight. At a certain point, I wasn’t tracking because I wanted to lose weight, but because I wanted to make sure I was eating the right foods, i.e. enough fruits & vegetables, enough protein, etc. to live a healthy lifestyle.
Celebrate small wins
Make sure to acknowledge your accomplishments. Keeping a journal can be a great way to set small, realistic goals. When I started my weight loss journey, I had a lot of weight to lose. That’s when I set a goal for myself to lose a significant amount of weight, it was a little overwhelming. Keeping a food journal helped me stay on track and celebrate small wins. I consistently logged what I ate and any weight I lost on a calorie counting apps that I used. Throughout my weight loss journey, I set small realistic goals (10 pounds at a time). After every 10 pounds lost, I was a step closer to my goal.
Break down future goals and next steps into actionable to-do lists.
Planning is key when setting goals for yourself. I generally like to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, and Time Based since they help keep you on track. They help me keep track of what needs to get done and set a plan. Keeping a journal throughout this process can help you track current goals so they can help you with future goals.
Take notes on things you read, hear and watch
Reading and staying up to date is very important to any journey you go through in your life. No matter how much you know on the said topic, there’s always more to learn and to improve on. As long as your taking notes and keeping a track record on what your learning, you will always have something to reference.
